Last night (18th May, 2012) I went to see an excellent two-hour film at The Torch Theatre in Milford Haven entitled “The Gospel of Us” (The Port Talbot Passion).
The film starred Michael Sheen and the people and talent of Port Talbot in South Wales. Michael Sheen is a world-renowned actor from Port Talbot.
The film concerned a leader-type person called The Teacher, a Jesus-type figure and his relationship with a Welsh seaside industrial town (Port Talbot) threatened by a large corporation called ICU. ICU wishes to build a giant passover. The film includes voices, visions and a host of talented characters from Port Talbot. “The Gospel of Us” is a moving, passionate and emancipatory film that ends on a chord of optimism. The penultimate sentence of the film “It is finished” (following the Crucifixion of The Teacher) is followed by the three magnificent words “It has begun.”
Hope triumphs over despair. The spirit triumphs over the spirit. To quote Dylan Thomas, the 20th century Welsh poet from Swansea,”and death shall have no dominion”. “The Gospel of Us” is a tremendous tribute to the human spirit in its endeavour to bring heaven to earth, goodness to light.
