World Hearing Voices Day celebrated the acceptance of voice hearing and promoted recovery for those with distressing voices

It was a truly amazing, emotional day as so many people shared their hearts.

Thank you for attending and making it a fantastic day!

Organisers Jess and Maria said of the day

“We would like to thank our guest speakers, we could not have asked for better, Hywel Davies, Paul Baker, Sue Ruggeri and David Creapz-Keay. We definitely found the cream of the crop, which also includes our helpers like Sarah, Chris, Dorothy, Caitlin, Donna, James and Keith.

And a Special thank you to all of you, please pass this on to others who attended that are not on our email list, you helped make this day the success it was. Thank you to all for participating, to all who asked their questions, shared their stories, read their wonderful poetry, shared their artwork.

We wanted a day of uniting, of hope and a chance for people to talk and exchange numbers, to look to working with one another in the future, to provide not just better but the best service.

One of the  most successful parts of the day I witnessed was, however, when everyone had nearly gone and I found two people exchange numbers in order to help support each other, you know who you are! Thank you for helping us achieve our goal.

Whether we are the voice hearer or a service provider we have to take some responsibility and work together for our united goal, recovery.

Recovery is like a jigsaw you have to find the right pieces for the right person, one size doesn’t fit all!

Thank you all once again. Hope we left you with hope.”

Jess Walker commenting on the feedback from those who attended said:

“Feedback has been constant and overwhelming, with so much learned, inspired, hopes raised and belongingness felt wanted to pass this on to everyone – especially those who inspired, raised hopes and created the feeling of a wonderful community – which was everyone there really as so much input from all”

Maria Saleem, the co-organiser added

“it was an incredible day. All the feed back I had on the day was fab in regards to all the speakers. All we did was provide the venue, you all provided the incredible atmosphere behind it to make such a fantastic day. I have been challenged by David Crepaz-Keay on how I am going to top this mmm, food for thought!.”

Hywel Davies, from Hearing Voices Network Cymru said

“The event was a tremendous success involving people from all over Wales and beyond. I want to extend my congratualtions to everyone who had the courage to attend because the warmth and spirit of the day was invigorating and memorable”

Paul Baker from INTERVOICE added

“Amazing day, well done Jess and Maria and all the people involved in organising the celebration, I was honoured to have been invited – thank you! I think it can be a model for future events for World Hearing Voices Day across the planet!”

Artwork by voice hearers was on display throughout the day. The Mental Health Foundation had an information stand about their Self Management Project based in Wales. Working To Recovery displayed publications about hearing voices and recovery. There was a relaxation area with a comfortable couch and music provided by headphones. A lunch was also provided.

By all accounts it was a vibrant day promoting awareness and unity in Wales

The event was organised marvelously by Maria and Jess. They facilitate the Visions and Voices group in Newport, South Wales. Their motivation to organise the day originated in the feeling of being inspired by the Hearing Voices Movement. They decided to hold the event to celebrate and unite peoples experiences and interpretation of their voices, through their highs and lows. With all the events going on around the world for the World Hearing Voices Day it only felt right to be uniting in the U.K.
