Adolygiad o “Y Negesydd” – Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru – Theatr Mwldan, Aberteifi – Mai 8, 2014.

Neithiwr, cefais y fraint o weld drama ardderchog, wefreiddiol a theimladwy yn y Gymraeg “Y Negesydd” gan Caryl Lewis; mae’n ymwneud ag unigolyn yng Ngheredigion sy’n clywed lleisiau ac sy fel petai’n cael ei “chroeshoelio” gan y gymuned am iddi glywed lleisiau.

Stori Elsi yw’r ddrama, merch ifanc wedi ei magu mewn cymuned draddodiadol Gymreig yn y cefn gwlad ym 50au’r ganrif ddiwethaf. Mae’n gyfnod o newid aruthrol, gyda dyfodiad y teleffon, trydan, peiriannau golchi a’r teledu i Geredigion wledig. Cyfnod o drai ydyw mewn crefydd a’r diwydiannau traddodiadol. Ceir dynion yn y gofod, ac mae’r byd yn dod yn llai ei faint. Rydym yn dilyn hanes Elsi o’r 1950au tan 1973.

Efallai taw Caryl Lewis, awdur y ddrama newydd hon, yw’r awdures cyfrwng Cymraeg fwyaf dawnus a mwyaf perthnasol o’i chenhedlaeth. Erbyn 2020, yn l y World Health Organization, bydd mwy o bobl yn y byd gorllewinol a chanddynt broblemau iechyd meddwl nag sydd ag afiechyd corfforol. Mae “Y Negesydd” yn ystyried sut y mae’r gymdeithas yn trin unigolion sy’n “wahanol”, yn ogystal themau fel y gwrthdaro bythol rhwng yr hen a’r ifainc.

Yn frodor o Ddihhewyd ger Aberaeron, Ceredigion, astudiodd Caryl Lewis ym Mhrifysgol Durham ac ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth. A hithau’n clywed lleisiau ei hunan, mae’n ysgrifennu ar gyfer plant ac oedolion. Hefyd, mae hi’n hoffi mentro i fyd y theatr a ffilm. Enillodd ei nofel “Iawn Boi?” wobr Tir Na n-Og yn 2004, a chipiodd ei llyfr “Martha, Jac a Sianco” wobr Llyfr y Flwyddyn 2005. Enillodd addasiad y nofel honno i’r teledu chwe gwobr BAFTA Cymru yn 2009. Cyrhaeddodd ei nofel ddiweddaraf “Naw Mis” restr fer Llyfr y Flwyddyn 2010. Cafodd Caryl ei henwi yn Hoff Awdur Iaith Gymraeg yn 2013. Un o’r cewri Cymreig yw hi.

Ffion Davies yw cyfarwyddwr “Y Negesydd”. Chwaraewyd Elsi gan Sara Lloyd-Gregory, y tad Edgar gan Geraint Morgan, a rhannau Ifan ac Annie gan Aled Pedrick a Lisa Marged. Roedd yn gynhyrchiad Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru o safon. Mwynhaodd cynulleidfa frwdfrydig Theatr Mwldan y ddrama a chodi ar eu traed i gymeradwyo’r perfformwyr haeddiannol.

Bydd “Y Negesydd” ar daith trwy Gymru tan Fai 24ain, 2014. Am ragor o wybodaeth am Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru a/neu “Y Negesydd” cysyllter

Review of “Y Negesydd” (“The Messenger”) – Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru/National Theatre of Wales – Theatr Mwldan,Aberteifi/Cardigan – 8/5/14

Last night I had the honour of seeing an excellent, moving and sensitive Welsh-language play “Y Negesydd” by Caryl Lewis about a voice hearer in rural West Wales (Ceredigion) who is metaphorically speaking crucified by the community for hearing voices.

The play is the story of Elsi,a young girl who was raised in a traditional Welsh rural community in the 1950’s. It is a time of exceptional change with the coming of telephone, electricity, washing machine and television to the rural Ceredigion. It is a time of decline in religion and traditional industries. Man is sent into space and the world becomes a smaller place. We follow the story of Elsi from the 1950’s until 1973.

The author of this new drama,Caryl Lewis,is possibly the most talented and most pertinent female Welsh-language female writer of her generation. By the year 2020,according to the World Health Organisation, more people in the western world will have mental health problems than physical ailments and “Y Negesydd” considers how society treats people who are “different” as well as themes such as the perpetual conflict between the old and the young.

A native of Dihewyd near Aberaeron in Ceredigion,Caryl Lewis studied at Durham University and Aberystwyth University. A voice hearer, she writes for children and adults. She also likes to venture into the world of theatre and film. Her novel “Iawn Boi?” (“Alright,Boy ?”) won the Tir-na-n-Og prize in 2004 and the book “Martha,Jac a Sianco” (“Martha,Jac and Sianco”) took the Welsh Book of the Year in 2005. The adaptation of that novel for television won six BAFTA Cymru awards in 2009. Her latest novel “Naw Mis” (“Nine Months”) reached the short list for Book of the Year in 2010. Caryl was named as Favourite Welsh-language Writer in Wales in 2013. Caryl Lewis is a major Welsh writer.

“Y Negesydd” is directed by Ffion Dafis. Elsi was played by Sara Lloyd-Gregory. Her father Edgar was played by Geraint Morgan. Ifan and Annie were played by Aled Pedrick and Lisa Marged respectively.
It was a fine Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru production. “Y Negesydd” was greatly enjoyed by an enthusiastic Theatr Mwldan audience that gave the performers a deserved standing ovation.

“Y Negesydd” remains on tour throughout Wales until May 24th 2014.
